Tooth Extraction in Houston, TX

Nobody wants to hear that a tooth needs to come out. But sometimes, extraction is the most sensible path forward, and when it is, having a team you trust makes all the difference. At Vintage Smile Family Dentistry, Dr. Husain Kapadia and Dr. Geeta Hanchate offer gentle tooth extraction in Houston, TX.

Whether you need a simple extraction for a damaged tooth or a more involved removal of an impacted wisdom tooth, we have the experience, technology, and bedside manner to get you through it.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Extraction is never the first option we reach for. Our goal is always to save a natural tooth whenever possible. But there are situations where keeping a tooth does more harm than good, or simply is not viable. Common reasons we may recommend an extraction include:

  • Severe decay that has damaged too much of the tooth structure to restore
  • A broken or cracked tooth that cannot be saved with a crown or other treatment
  • Advanced gum disease that has caused significant bone loss around the tooth
  • An abscess or infection that has not responded to root canal therapy
  • Crowding that is interfering with orthodontic treatment
  • Baby teeth that have not fallen out on their own and are blocking adult teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that are causing pain, infection, or shifting other teeth

If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been told you may need an extraction, we encourage you to come in for an evaluation. We will take X-rays, thoroughly examine the area, and go over exactly what we see and what we recommend, no pressure, no rush.

What to Expect During Your Extraction

Before we get started, the area will be completely numbed with a local anesthetic. If you tend to get nervous at the dentist, let us know. We offer nitrous oxide and sleep sedation. Once you are comfortable and numb, the extraction itself is usually faster than most patients expect.

You may feel pressure and movement, but you should not feel pain. If at any point something feels sharp or uncomfortable, tell us immediately, and we can always adjust the anesthetic.

After the tooth is removed, we will place gauze over the socket and have you bite down gently to help a blood clot form. We will go over aftercare instructions before you leave, so you know exactly what to do and what to watch for over the next several days.

Aftercare and Recovery

Most patients recover from a simple extraction within a few days. A surgical extraction or wisdom tooth removal may take a bit longer, typically a week to ten days, before things feel mostly normal. Here is what recovery generally looks like and how to support healing:

  • Bite down on gauze for the first 30 to 45 minutes to help the clot form; replace it if needed
  • Avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting forcefully, or using a straw for the first 24 hours; these can dislodge the clot.
  • Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, and eggs for the first couple of days.
  • Take any medications prescribed to you as directed and use over-the-counter pain medications as needed.
  • Rest with your head slightly elevated, especially on the first day.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after 24 hours, a few times a day, to keep the area clean.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products. Tobacco slows healing and increases your risk of dry socket.

Some swelling and mild discomfort in the first 48 to 72 hours is normal. If you notice worsening pain after the third or fourth day, an unpleasant taste, or a visible empty socket (signs of dry socket), call our office. Dry socket is treatable; we just need to see you.

Why Choose Us for Tooth Extraction in Houston, TX

Both Dr. Kapadia and Dr. Hanchate are known for their calm, patient-centered approach. They take the time to explain what they are doing, check in with you throughout the procedure, and never make you feel rushed. Patients who come in nervous often leave saying the experience was much easier than they anticipated.

Dental anxiety is real, and we take it seriously. Nitrous oxide and sleep sedation are available for patients who need a little extra support to feel comfortable. Our goal is to make sure fear never stands between you and the necessary care.

We provide general, restorative, and surgical dental care all in one place, so you will not need to travel to a separate oral surgeon for most extractions. When a replacement tooth is needed, we can also manage that here, including implants, dentures, and bridges.

We accept most major PPO and HMO insurance plans, Medicaid, MCNA Dental, and DentaQuest. For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan and financing options through Cherry, Sunbit, and LendingClub keep treatment accessible. We will always review your benefits and give you clear cost information before treatment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

A simple extraction can take as little as 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish. Surgical extractions or wisdom tooth removals take longer, typically 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity. We will give you a realistic time estimate during your consultation.

Do I have to replace the extracted tooth?

Wisdom teeth generally do not need to be replaced. For other teeth, replacement is strongly recommended. A missing tooth causes the surrounding bone to gradually shrink, and neighboring teeth can drift into the space over time, affecting your bite and making future restorations more complicated. The sooner you address it, the more straightforward the solution tends to be.

Can I eat before a tooth extraction?

If you are having a simple extraction with just local anesthesia, you can eat beforehand. If you are planning to use sleep sedation or IV sedation, you will typically need to fast for several hours before the appointment. We will give you specific instructions when you schedule.
